Extrusion Assessment Including Tooling Methods
There’s a lot of so-called “experts” out there willing to look at your extrusion process and give their recommendation on what they believe is the latest and greatest processes. I know what works and what doesn’t, just like them. However, I also understand that you do not have an unlimited budget. I clearly see what the so-called experts often overlook – you cannot afford to start over and reinvent the wheel.
When I do an assessment, I look for the pivotal points that have the most impact. Are the operators trained and do they understand how to run, or troubleshoot, an extruder? Is the instrumentation on the extruders adequate for the operator to run them efficiently? Do the operators know what they are looking at?
Tooling methods often have a lot to do with the operator’s success. I’m not talking about what’s the latest design, instead, when I review tooling methods, I am looking at whether the tooling is user friendly. Are Lean Manufacturing principles being applied? Is Lean Tooling coming out of the toolroom to the floor? Can anything be done to help Reduce Operators Interaction with the Process (ROIP)?
